As an inaugural member of the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) Physician Corps, you'll join a cross-disciplinary team of physicians, a clinical psychologist, nurses, social workers, lawyers, and program operators delivering what we believe every patient deserves: accessible, high-quality, and innovative care. Our patients are formerly incarcerated individuals and other chronically underserved communities in rural Alabama. For some of our patients, this may be the first time they've experienced care outside of incarceration.
The EJI Physician Corps program is a two-year, full-time clinical role in our clinic, EJI Health, centered on direct patient care. You will see patients, build relationships, and practice medicine with the time and team support that traditional clinical settings typically are not able to allow. You'll also help shape how we practice and advance our model. Our low-threshold HCV program, for example, was developed with leadership from our physicians whose clinical expertise helped bring it to life.
You will also gain exposure to EJI's broader mission, including its legal, reentry, anti-poverty, and public education work, deepening your understanding of how these forces shape public health and care delivery.

About EJI Health
In 2023, EJI opened a health clinic, EJI Health, in Montgomery, AL to provide free health care to people who are formerly incarcerated and other vulnerable populations in Alabama. We believe that access to high-quality health care is essential for reducing poverty and is a basic human right. In addition to our brick-and-mortar clinic located in Montgomery, we operate a mobile health unit that provides free health services across Alabama.
Our clinic model is built for depth, with small case loads, extended appointment times, a dedicated cross-disciplinary team, and an onsite CLIA-waived point-of-care lab that enables real-time diagnostics and streamlined care delivery. In addition to providing transitional primary care, we offer mental health support, a smoking cessation program, eye exams and glasses, and women’s health cancer screenings. We also have pioneered a low-threshold hepatitis C testing and treatment model given the high burden of hepatitis C in our patient population.
Primary Responsibilities
Provide transitional primary care, including diagnosis and treatment of common chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, kidney disease, depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
Create a safe and dignified space for patients who have traditionally lacked access to care, have significant mistrust of medical providers, and may have suffered medical neglect while incarcerated.
Conduct comprehensive health screenings and clinical assessments across various community settings aboard a mobile health unit.
Perform screening and initial evaluation of infectious diseases, such as HIV and hepatitis C. Preference for candidates who are willing to prescribe direct-acting antiviral treatment for hepatitis C after undergoing training and with support from clinicians with experience.
Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to creatively address structural determinants of health through mobile outreach and social support. EJI Health’s interdisciplinary team includes other providers, registered nurses, administrative staff, and social work and legal support from EJI.
